Ted's Poem

In memory of Edward James Jones (Ted)

† Passed away 15th August 2001

We did not know Ted for very long. The first time we met was on the 14th February 2001. Ted and his sister had been separated in London in 1938. Ted's sister was placed in an orphanage and Ted was placed elsewhere, they were not to meet for another 63 years. We visited Ted in February 2001 to inform him that his long lost sister had been searching for her family for the past 15 years. In that time several other agencies had been searching. In late January 2001 we were asked if we would help, within two weeks we had located the family. This is Ted's Poem.

Mother, Mother what have you done,
you had a Daughter... and a Son,
the boy with only years of two,
had a sister he never knew.

At three months old, such an early age,
you took her to an Orphanage,
to a big ship, the girl would go,
sailing to where... she did not know.

Months and Months she was on the sea,
with other girls... wondering what was to be,
Australia was now their home, they were told,
this land so big, so free, so bold.

GOODWOOD ORPHANAGE... the big sign said,
your new home, where you will be clothed and fed,
you suffered the pain and loneliness,
who cared?... who cared less?

You are in the land of milk and honey,
but all you longed for was your mummy,
so many years have now slipped by,
so many nights you had a good cry.
to find the answers... as to why.

The lies and deceit that were told to you,
these horrible things that people can do,
then a wonderful sparkle came into your life.
along came these strangers, a man and his wife,

They searched around and found your brother,
what wonderful news, you have another,
and from this brother your world grew.
to a family quite large, you never knew.

Tears of joy flow everywhere,
you now have two brothers and a sister out there,
nephews and nieces, cousins galore.
you also have two Sisters-in-law,

You pinch yourself, is this for real,
can I now let my wounds begin to heal,
oh, Mike and Nita, what can I say.
You've rested my ghosts this Valentines Day!

To Evelyn, Love from Edward-18th February 2001.
